On April 25, 2020, the Ontario Government amended Ontario Regulation 82/20 to permit the use of community gardens during the COVID-19 pandemic. The provincial announcement stated, “these gardens are an essential source of fresh food for some individuals and families, including those who face food insecurity”.

Community gardens can provide fresh produce at low or no cost in the summer months and are considered an important component of a healthy community food system.

The Township of Tiny has implemented COVID-19 operating procedures and guidelines that must be followed by all gardeners in order to keep everyone safe. These guidelines align with best practices provided by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. The guidelines apply to municipal staff, volunteers and garden users to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19 while using a shared garden space.

With these revised guidelines in place, the Township of Tiny plans to open the Perkinsfield Park Community Garden in the coming weeks. There are 20 raised garden plots (four feet by eight feet) available on a first come, first served basis.

The cost to rent a garden plot is $25 (+HST) for the season. Registration for garden plots will be available online through Tiny’s Online Portal (www.tiny.ca/onlineportal) starting on Friday, May 8.

Registered garden users will be able to access the Community Garden as early as May 15. Visit www.tiny.ca/environment for more information, including the Garden Policy, Rental Contract, COVID-19 Guidelines and registration options.

The Township of Tiny’s Community Gardens are outdoor spaces on designated public lands where the community can meet to plant, grow and care for vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs. The Community Gardens positively contribute to environmental, social and economic sustainability and overall community engagement in the Township of Tiny.
