No local COVID-19 cases among 35 reported in region today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 35 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in its update today, Feb. 11.

The two deaths reported today include an Innisfil and a Barrie resident. Both were individuals whose cases are associated with the ongoing outbreak at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre transitional care unit. A woman between 45 and 64 years old died on Feb. 10. A man between 65 and 79 years old who contracted COVID during the outbreak also died, but the health unit did not report his date of death.

According to the health unit, 133 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern UK B.1.1.7 and an additional 93 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing). 

The new cases reported today include one Collingwood resident, 18 Barrie residents, five Bradford West Gwillimbury residents, and six Innisfil residents.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 5,844 cases of COVID-19 with 4,916 of those cases recovered and 171 cases ending in death. There are 717 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County. 

There are 30 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. There have been two new hospitalizations since yesterday's update. 

The health unit has administered more than 24,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka to health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as to all eligible long-term care home residents. The health unit reports nearly 8,000 people in the region have received both required doses of the vaccine.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Collingwood (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case transmission is still under investigation. 
  • Barrie (18): Two boys under 18, four women and five men between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, a woman and three men between 45 and 64 years old, and two men over 80. Six cases are linked to close contact, four cases are outbreak-related, and three were community-acquired. 
  • Springwater (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case was community-acquired.
  • Innisfil (6): Two girls under 18, a woman between 18 and 34y ears old, a man and a woman between 35 and 44 years old, and a woman between 65 and 79 years old. Four cases are linked to close contact, one was community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (5): A boy under 18, a woman between 18 and 34 years old, man between 35 and 44 yeas old, and two women between 45 and 64 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact.
  • Oro-Medonte (1): A woman between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
  • Essa (1): A  woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case is attributed to close contact. 
  • New Tecumseth (2): A man and a woman between 35 and 44 years old and a woman between 45 and 64 years old and 34 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission.
