Founded in 1982, Gateway Centre for Learning provides one-on-one adult tutoring programs to individuals in the Midland community.

Gateway’s Adult Literacy Program consists of tutoring, small group classes and workshops.

Battling the stigma of adult literacy development, Gateway’s vital programs present an opportunity for adults to develop and expand literacy, math and computer skills in a safe and welcoming environment.

The organization's partnership program with external non-profits and services allows learners to seek additional services beyond skillsets and literacy learning.

This unique holistic approach to learning does not limit skills development to the classroom exclusiviely.

“Forty to 50 per cent of learners self-identify as needing help in other areas,” said Jennifer Ellis, Executive Director at Gateway Centre for Learning.

Referrals are available to learners who seek assistance with external issues like food insecurity, housing, mental health or transportation obstacles.

“We identify the gap for you to get to your goals and provide the appropriate training and referrals needed,” said Ellis.

Gateway strives to provide a safe and positive environment for learners.

“Starting the program at Gateway is what triggered my confidence to go back to school. I am so thankful for the employees who kindly worked with me, encouraged me and helped with technical issues when I was able to be in person at the site,” said one of the learners at Gateway.

The successful programs available to the Midland community are made possible by the dedicated and compassionate volunteers involved.

Volunteer opportunities at Gateway Centre for Learning include one-on-one adult tutoring, office support and bookstore assistance.

“No one achieves success entirely on their own. We have all had mentors and friends to help us reach our goals throughout our lives. I want to be one of those people,” Fran Roosen, a Volunteer at Gateway Centre for Learning.

Gateway’s used bookstore, Bookmark Used Books is available to the public to donate and buy used books at a reasonable price. All used book sale proceeds go directly to Gateway’s Adult Literacy programs.

Bookmark Used Books is staffed entirely by volunteers and is located beside the main office in downtown Midland.

“Volunteering as a tutor at Gateway has enriched my life. The outcome is truly amazing and is measurable,” said Roosen.

Gateway Centre for Learning is seeking volunteers for programs, Bookmark Used Books operations and office support.
