WATCH: York University campus will be built in Markham with provincial support, Ford says

Village Media will carry the livestream

Update:

The Ontario government announced support today to build a York University campus in Markham.

Funding support for the operations of the campus is slated to begin when the province opens its doors in 2023, linked directly to student enrolment.

According to the Ontario government, this marks the first publicly assisted university in York region, as well as the first project proceeding under the government's updated Major Capacity Expansion Policy Framework.

The premier says construction will begin this month and will aid in York Region's post-COVID-19 economic recovery, as the school is expected to generate over $350 million in immediate economic benefits, and create over 2,000 jobs.

The Markham Centre Campus, which will be located on a five-acre site just north of Highway 407 and west of Kennedy Rd, is expected to open in fall of 2023, specializing in university programs in tech, commerce, data science and entrepreneurship at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

A press release issued by Ford's government states that the campus will be able to accommodate 4,200 students, at over 400,000 square feet.
