Brock Peel, co-owner of Canadian Sanitation, is focused on making his company the leading septic service provider in Simcoe County.

Canadian Sanitation offers a comprehensive range of services, including septic pumping, inspections, bed remediation, system installations, and repairs.

Additionally, Canadian Sanitation was recently honoured with the "Septic Business of the Year 2023-2024" award by the Ontario Onsite Wastewater Association, which is the primary regulating organization for the entire septic industry in the province.

One common question that homeowners have is why the size of a leaching bed changes based on soil conditions.

Peel explains, "The size of your leaching field depends on the daily flow volume from your home and the soil’s percolation time, known as 'T-time.' For instance, sandy soils with a T-time of 12 minutes per centimetre require much smaller leaching areas compared to clay soils, which may have a T-time of 50 minutes per centimetre."

Using the Ontario Building Code’s formula, a standard three-bedroom home typically has a flow rate of 1600 litres per day and would need a leaching bed area of about 22.6 square meters in sandy soil. In contrast, the same home in clay soil would need around 94.1 square meters. This significant difference is due to the varying rates at which different soil types can absorb and filter wastewater.

Peel emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance for homeowners, stating, "Homeowners should have their septic system inspected annually and pumped every three years to prevent any large-scale issues."

The company's services are especially crucial as the seasons change, with Peel advising that now is the ideal time for residents to consider septic system maintenance. This can prevent emergencies such as system backups, which can cause significant inconvenience and potential health hazards.

"When we inspect an older system and notice issues like slow draining or breakout, we can often remediate it," explains Peel.

By addressing these problems, Canadian Sanitation can restore such systems to 80–90 per cent of their original functioning capacity. This remediation can significantly extend the life of the system, potentially adding another 15 years of service.

Canadian Sanitation conducts standard maintenance and specializes in comprehensive real estate inspections and hydraulic load tests. These tests ensure that septic systems are functioning correctly without overloading, which can lead to system failure.

Peel's background in residential construction and excavation background gives him a unique perspective on septic system management. He brings a depth of understanding and experience, which he believes sets Canadian Sanitation apart as a market leader in the septic industry.

"We’re not just about installing and fixing; we want to educate homeowners on the best practices for septic system care," Peel explains.

Peel and his team tailor septic systems to the specific needs of each new house, understanding that no two systems are alike.

Depending on the level of treatment required and the property's characteristics, Canadian Sanitation can implement several types of septic systems, ensuring each is the most efficient and cost-effective for the homeowner. This tailored approach aims to create systems with the smallest possible environmental footprint while maximizing functionality and efficiency.

"Our focus is solely on septic systems, which means we bring nuanced expertise to every job,” Peel said. "Our goal is to prevent problems before they happen, saving homeowners time and money.”
