Two novice drivers in their 20s face charges over Hwy. 400 speeding

Both drivers end up with vehicles towed, driver's licences suspended and a court date

GEORGIAN BAY TOWNSHIP – The local Ontario Provincial Police detachment says an officer laid two stunt driving charges against drivers with novice driver's licences after their vehicles were clocked reaching excessive speeds on Highway 400.

In one case, the driver was also charged with having an open container of liquor in the vehicle.

Southern Georgian Bay OPP say on Sunday shortly after 11:30 a.m. a black Honda CRV appeared to be travelling well above the posted 100km/hr Highway 400 speed limit. It was determined the vehicle was travelling at 154 km/hr, police said in a news release.

The vehicle was safely stopped near Go Home Lake Road.

After further investigation, the 23-year-old male with a novice "G2" class licence from Toronto was charged with:

  • Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform stunt - Excessive speed
  • Speeding 50+ Km/h over posted limit

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Provincial Offences Court. 

His vehicle was towed and impounded for 14 days and his driver's licence was suspended for 30 days, according to police.

Earlier, on Thursday at around 3:15 p.m. the same officer caught sight of a Dodge Ram pickup travelling well above the post 100 km/hr posted Highway 400 speed limit.

A speed of 160 km/hr was obtained for the pickup which was safely stopped in the area of Honey Harbour Road, police said.

The officer entered into a stunt driving as well as a Liquor Licence and Control Act investigation.

A 22-year-old male from Parry Sound with a novice driver's licence was charged with:

  • Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform stunt - Excessive speed
  • Speeding 50+ Km/h over posted limit
  • Colour coating obscuring interior

The driver was also charged under the Liquor Licence and Control Act with:

  • Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available

The accused had his pickup truck towed from the scene and impounded for 14 days and his driver's licence was suspended for 30 days.

He is also scheduled to appear before the Ontario Provincial Offences Court, police said.
