While most people are familiar with the dried flower version of cannabis, some connoisseurs of the plant branch out into the world of cannabis concentrates. According to Chelsea Murray, General Manager of Speakeasy Cannabis, cannabis concentrates are best for people who have prior experience with traditional cannabis because the effects can be felt quickly and intensely. “When a customer says that they’re just not getting the same high as they used to, we usually recommend that they step up into the concentrate field,” explains Chelsea.

Cannabis concentrates, sometimes called extracts, are produced by extracting the cannabinoids and terpenes from the fresh or dried flowers. It is then processed further to produce a number of liquid and solid products including oil, shatter, rosin, resin, crumble, and wax. These concentrates generally contain up to 90% THC while the dried flower contains between 1% and 30% THC, depending on the individual product.

The price point per gram of concentrate is slightly higher than its unprocessed counterpart because it takes a lot of cannabis flower to produce the concentrated final product. “Producers get about a gram of resin or rosin out of an ounce of cannabis flower,” says Chelsea. “You definitely want to use the right tools when you’re getting into concentrates because you don’t want to waste your product.”

There are many tools and accessories on the market that are designed specifically for use with different types of concentrates. Dab tools, dab rigs, specialized vaporizers, and high-temperature torch lighters are useful for certain types of concentrates. The knowledgeable staff at Speakeasy Cannabis are incredibly helpful in giving their recommendations.

“I highly recommend talking with your budtender before getting into concentrates. Find out what they use and what their customers like. Look up review online as well. Some of the accessories for concentrates are a bit of an investment so you should make sure you know what you are looking for,” advises Chelsea.
