Unlocked vehicle entered in Penetanguishene, leads to theft charge

On the morning of Aug. 24, 2020 the Communications Centre of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Orillia received a complaint from a Penetanguishene resident reporting an over night theft of a wallet as a result of an unlocked vehicle entry on Yeo Street. Members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment spoke with the victim and learned that a credit card from the stolen wallet was later used at an area retail store.

Through investigation techniques and surveillance footage the suspect was identified and officers located and arrested Jonathan Sylvester, 31 years, of Penetanguishene on Aug. 25, 2020 for the following property related offences.

  • Theft Under $5,000 from a Motor Vehicle
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 - in Canada
  • Use of Credit Card

Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused was released from custody after being held a video bail hearing on a release order to appear on October 29, 2020 before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland.
