Traffic stop results in multiple charges for Midland driver

PENETANGUISHENE – On Jan. 28, 2021 just after midnight, a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Southern Georgian Bay Detachment stopped a vehicle on Main St. in the Town of Penetanguishene. The officer spoke with the driver and suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol. The officer conducted a roadside screening test on the driver which he failed so he was placed under arrest. Further investigation revealed the the drive was prohibited from driving in Canada and a search located open alcohol and a quantity of cannabis weighing more than thirty grams. The driver was transported to detachment to provide further breath samples.

As a result of the investigation, Matthew Trott, 40 years of Midland, Ont. was charged with the following offences: 

• Operation over 80 milligrams contrary to the Criminal Code 
• Driving while disqualified contrary to the Criminal Code 
• Possession of over 30 grams of dried cannabis contrary to the Cannabis Act 
• Fail to comply with an order made during a declared emergency contrary to the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act 
• Drive handheld communication device contrary to the Highway Traffic Act 
• Drive motor vehicle with open alcohol contrary to the Liquor License Act

The vehicle belonging to the accused was towed to be impounded for seven days. He was released from custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Feb. 11, 2021.
