Teen charged in relation to cyber harassment of local students

In March 2022, numerous students at Midland school became victims of social media harassment that disrupted their school and home lives

A seven-month-long cyber-based investigation into the alleged harassment of over 21 students at a Georgian Bay District Secondary School through social media has been concluded.

In March 2022, numerous students at the school became victims of harassment on a public social media platform that resulted in disruption of their school and social/home life. School officials contacted the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Detachment to report the incidents, which were then investigated by the OPP community service officer who works collaboratively within the school.

As a result of this in-depth cyber investigation, a 16-year-old male of Peel Region was identified and diverted to the Associated Youth Services of Peel in partnership with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe-Muskoka for the following offences:

  • Harassing communications
  • Unauthorized use of computer - obtain computer service
  • Defamation known to be false
