Tay man charged with using counterfeit $100 bills

Phony bills allegedly used at Huronia Mall in Midland last month

Southern Georgian OPP have arrested a Tay Township in relation to counterfeit $100 bills used at Midland-area retailers last month.

Police received several calls from Midland-area retailers in early October, including from a Huronia Mall retail outlet, where phony bills had been used to make in-store purchases. Officers then began an investigation into the passing of the $100 bills, which featured a similar design to the Canadian $100 bill.

As a result of their investigation, police have charged Tyler Handy, 40, for Uttering Counterfeit Money - contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was released from police custody on a recognizance with conditions to appear before the Ontario before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on November 18.

The OPP advises retailers to be aware of these kinds of incidents and to carefully inspect money being used, especially large bills.
