Suspicious death becomes homicide probe; OPP release victim's name

Post mortem examination confirmed the 24-year-old victim died as a result of a gunshot wound

TAY TOWNSHIP - The death of an individual in Tay Township has been confirmed as a homicide.

On Monday, July 5, 2021 at approximately 11 p.m., members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an incident at a residence on Old Fort Road in Tay Township. Officers located a deceased adult male outside the home.

The victim has been identified as Jonus Keegan Palmer, age 24 of Tay Township, Ont. A post mortem examination at the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto on July 7, 2021 has confirmed the cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Police believe there is no threat to the general public as this is not believed to be a random incident. Investigators did make an arrest at the scene, but it was unrelated to the homicide. No further details on that arrest can be released at this time.

The investigation by the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), with assistance from the OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario is ongoing.
