Stolen vessel investigation nets a boatload of charges from OPP

A quantity of liquor was seized, operator failed sobriety test and police discovered boat was stolen from Peterborough area

The Southern Georgian Bay marine unit conducted a routine check of this vessel and learned it had been stolen. The operator is facing a slew of charges.

Members of the Marine Unit attached to the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) while patrolling the Trent Severn Water System on June 6, 2020 conducted a vessel check of 16' beige Sea Nymph.

The officers located and seized a quantity of liquor and the operator was given a Roadside Screening Device (RSD) test which resulted in a three-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS).

After further investigation into the vessel registration, the officers learned that the vessel had been reported stolen in the Peterborough area and the operator of the vessel was placed under arrest.

As a result of this investigation Joseph Vrana 44 years of Alnwick-Halimand Township has been charged with the following offences;

  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 - in Canada
  • Obstruct Peace Officer

Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

  • Operating boat underway with open container of liquor

Contrary to the Liquor Licence Act

  • Failure to have proof of competency on board a pleasure craft
  • Operating vessel in a careless manner, without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons
  • Operating pleasure craft without copy of licence on board
  • Operating non-human-powered pleasure craft without prescribed visual signals on board
  • Operating non-human-powered pleasure craft without prescribed additional personal life-saving appliances on board
  • Operating non-human-powered pleasure craft without prescribed vessel safety equipment on board

Contrary to the Canada Shipping Act

The accused was released from custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on August 27, 2020

The need to check your vessel for having all the required safety equipment is as always very important and unfortunately only tested in the case of an emergency. Remember Life Jackets only work if you Wear Them!
