The province’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 77-year-old man yesterday in Victoria Harbour.

Around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, 911 received a call from the man seeking assistance with Southern Georgian Bay OPP officers arriving a short time later and proceeding to knock on the home’s front door, according to the Special Investigations Unit.

“When they received no response, they made their way to the back of the house where they located the man seated in a chair in the driveway,” an SIU release said.

“As the officers approached the man, the man discharged his firearm and he sustained a gunshot wound. He was transported by ambulance to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

The SIU has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case with the two responding officers and three “witness officers have been designated.”

A post-mortem is slated for tomorrow in Toronto.

In a release, the SIU urges anyone with information about the investigation to contact the lead investigator at (800) 787-8529. The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Under the Police Services Act, the SIU director must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid.
