Two OPP officers in their cruisers narrowly escaped a collision with a speeding vehicle that had a suspected impaired driver behind the wheel, police say.

Officers responding to a call were heading north on Simcoe County Road 6 approaching the intersection of Concession 11 in Tiny Township at around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

A vehicle travelling at high speed westbound on Concession 11 East approached the stop sign at Simcoe County Road 6.

The vehicle went "airborne" as it cleared the intersection in front of the cruisers, missing them both, Southern Georgian Bay OPP said in a news release.

The officers were able to locate and stop the vehicle nearby.

Following an investigation, Allen Tripp, 32, of Tay Township was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs and operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The driver is also charged with disobeying a stop sign/fail to stop contrary and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.

The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on June 15.

He faces a 90-day driver's licence suspension and 14-day vehicle impound, police added.

None of the allegations has been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
