Every Orillia OPP patrol vehicle is now installed with automated licence plate recognition and in-car camera systems.

The technology allows officers to access information about invalid licence plates that are not valid, stolen vehicles, wanted or missing persons, stolen and unattached plates, suspended or prohibited drivers, and vehicles that are associated with Amber Alerts.

“This will support officers in maintaining a safer community and input data at a faster rate than human input,” a news release stated.

The in-vehicle cameras will allow police to “display transparency, professionalism, accountability, as well as investigative excellence to our communities.”

Police remind drivers vehicle owners are not required to buy a validation sticker, but licence plates must be renewed to be valid annually or biannually.
