Earlier this year, Ontarians rejoiced as the Ford government announced the scrapping of licence plate renewal fees and stickers, but police are reminding drivers that plates must still be renewed.
In a social media video post last week, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sgt. Kerry Schmidt noted officers are seeing an uptick in motorists driving without proper vehicle registration.
As per the Highway Traffic Act, drivers caught on the road without a validated permit can be fined anywhere from $60 to $1,000.
"It may not cost anything but you are still required to go online and renew your registration," said Schmidt. "It's up to you to renew your validation."
Drivers no longer receive a licence plate renewal reminder in the mail but are still required to renew online here, in person at Service Ontario or by mail. Drivers can also sign up for a reminder email through Service Ontario.
To renew online, all you need is:
- your plate number
- your permit number
- mileage of the vehicle
- insurance
