Numerous area drivers face alcohol related charges

Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have removed a number of impaired drivers from area roadways thank you in part to the efforts of observant members of the public who took the time to 'Make the Call' and help prevent a serious crash or injury.

On Sept. 23, 2020 at 5:33 a.m., a member of the public called the OPP Communication Center at 1-888-310-1122 to report a single vehicle into the ditch on Rue Lafontaine, Tiny Township. The responding uniform officer spoke with the lone driver of the vehicle and entered into a drinking and driving investigation resulting in a further investigation at detachment.

As a result, Johnathan Cascagnette, 29 years of Tay Township, has been charged with the following driving offences:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol; and
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Nov. 26, 2020.

OPP officers were dispatched to Concession Road 12 west near Tiny Beaches Road North in Tiny Township at 5:20 p.m. Sept. 21, 2020 after a passing motorist noted a driver slumped over the steering wheel of the car. County of Simcoe Paramedics along with OPP officers attended the location and officers arrested the driver at the scene and continued the drinking and driving investigation at detachment.

As a result of this investigation Kevin Watters, 62 years of Midland, has been charged with the following driving offences:
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus); and
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Nov. 26, 2020.

At 8:38 p.m. Sept. 19, 2020, OPP officers were in receipt of a call from the public reporting a possible impaired driver after a person was refused service at an area establishment and was observed driving. A uniform OPP officer on patrol located and stopped the described vehicle on Overhead Bridge Road, Tiny Township and upon speaking with the driver and making a liquor seizure from the vehicle, the officer entered into a drinking and driving investigation.

The investigation lead to a ride back to detachment for the driver resulting in the following driving offences against Donna Morin, 49 years of Tiny Township:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol, and
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada;
    •    Novice driver - B.A.C. above zero, and
    •    Class G1 licence holder - unaccompanied by qualified driver contrary to the Highway Traffic Act;
    •    Operate a motor vehicle without insurance Contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, and
    •    Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to the Liquor Licence Act.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Dec. 3, 2020.

As a result of a driving complaint on Simcoe County Road 93 northbound from Wyebridge, an OPP officer on patrol located and stopped the suspect vehicle on Heritage Drive in the Town of Midland. The officer spoke with and arrested with the driver, seized liquor from the vehicle leading to a drinking and driving investigation.

This investigation resulted in Byron Walker, 57 years of Gravenhurst, being charged with the following offences in relation to this investigation:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol, and
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada;
    •    Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to the Liquor Licence of Ontario; and
    •    Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available contrary to the Cannabis Control Act.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Nov. 19, 2020.

OPP officers were dispatched at 4:14 p.m. Sept. 17, 2020 to a report of a possible impaired driver driving about Port McNicoll, Tay Township. A uniform officer located and stopped the suspect vehicle and spoke with the driver who failed the roadside screening device (ASD).

A further investigation resulted in Rory Kyle, 44 years of Midland, being charged with the following offences:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol, and
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Dec. 9,2020.

A uniform OPP officer while on patrol noted an eastbound vehicle on Golf Link Road having difficulty negotiating the intersection at Simcoe County Road 93 at 3:27 a.m. Sept. 13, 2020. The officer was able to stop the vehicle and enter into a drinking and driving investigation after speaking with the driver.

The driver was transported to detachment for further investigation resulting in Michael David Smith, 28 years of Tiny Township, being charged with the following driving offences:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol, and
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada; and
    •    Driving while under suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic of Ontario.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Dec. 10,2020.

A uniform OPP officer operating a marked OPP cruiser on Beck Boulevard, Penetanguishene had to take evasive action to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle after being passed by a same-direction vehicle on Sept. 12, 2020 at 1:02 a.m. The officer was able to safely stop the passing vehicle on Peel Street, Penetanguishene and spoke with the driver who was arrested at the scene and transported to detachment for further investigation.

Bryan Yates, 68 years of Penetanguishene, has been charged with the following driving offences:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol, and
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Nov. 12,2020.

On Sept. 10, 2020 at 4:04 p.m., detachment members on patrol were advised of a possible impaired driver operating a black Dodge pick up in the area of Yonge and Eighth Streets in the Town of Midland called into the OPP Provincial Communications Center at 1-888-310-1122 by a concerned citizen. The suspect vehicle was observed pulling into a Yonge Street Motel and the driver was located and arrested by members of the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and a further investigation was conducted by uniform members resulting in Dacota Douglas Kidd, 28 years of New Tecumseth, being charged with the following offences:
    •    Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs,
    •    Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and
    •    Fail to comply with Probation Order contrary to the Criminal Code;
    •    Driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor contrary to the Liquor Licence Act;
    •    Fail to surrender insurance card contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act; and
    •    Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit, and
    •    Driving while under suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

The accused was served a 90 day drivers licence suspension and seven day vehicle impound as per the Ministry of Transportation (ADLS) program and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Nov. 26, 2020.

Officers also conducted 21 Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere ( R.I.D.E.) check stops throughout the detachment patrol area during the Sept. 7-22, 2020 period checking over 700 drivers and vehicles.

Police remind motorists that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our trails, roadways and waterways.
