Man behind bomb threat at Orillia city hall faces more charges

A joint investigation with South Simcoe Police Service and Rama Police Service uncovered more incidents between Jan. 25 and May 20 at various locations

Members of the Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid additional charges in relation to multiple bomb threats at the Orillia City Centre. Further investigation resulted in a joint investigation with South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS) and Rama Police Service (RPS), as similar incidents were being investigated in their jurisdictions.

These incidents occurred between Jan. 25, 2022 and May 20, 2022 and were associated to a number of different locations. No explosive devices were located.

The Orillia OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), has laid additional charges in relation to these incidents, as a result of the joint forces operation with SSPS and RPS.

As a result of the investigation, Ricardo Groen, age 35 of Orillia, faces the following additional Criminal Code offences:
    •    Public mischief, section 140(1)(c) - three counts
    •    False information, section 372(1) - three counts

The accused remains in custody and his next court date is scheduled for June 15, 2022, at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia.
