Local driver facing impaired charge after ditching vehicle

Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remain vigilant for impaired drivers on area roadways in North Simcoe.

On April 8, 2020 at 2:10 a.m. officers responded to a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver in the Victoria Harbour area. A responding officer located a vehicle matching the description in the ditch on Maskinonge Road in Tay Township. Further investigation at the scene resulted in the officer arresting the 62-year-old male driver of Tay Township and continuing the investigation at detachment.

As a result of the completed investigation the driver was charged with the following driving offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada: 

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs  
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days as per the conditions of the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS). Accused was released from police custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on June 18, 2020.

On April 7, 2020 at 4:57 p.m., OPP officers responded to a complaint from a motorist of a possible impaired driver on Heritage Drive in the area of Jones Road in the Town of Midland. Officers on patrol located and stopped a vehicle matching the description and spoke with the driver and entered into a drinking and driving investigation. The driver was arrested at the scene and transported to detachment for breath tests as part of a impaired driving investigation.

As a result of this investigation a 62-year-old female of Sudbury has been charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada:  

  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand  
  • Obstruct Peace Officer

The accused driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days as per the conditions of the Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS). Accused was released from police custody on a recognizance to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on June 18, 2020.

OPP officers remind drivers that they will be taking all precautions available during this time to protect themselves and others while conducting investigations either at the roadside or at detachment. Calls from the public are always appreciated as road safety is paramount for all road users.
