An arrest has been made after an inmate at Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene sustained serious injuries in an assault.

On the morning of May 13, members of the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were notified of the incident. The victim was transported to a local hospital, and due to the nature of the injuries, was then transported to a Toronto-area hospital via Ornge air ambulance. The victim remains in serious but stable condition.

Detectives from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP Crime Unit and OPP Regional Support Team are conducting an investigation under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch.

On May 17, Victor Esipu, 34, of Owen Sound, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, contrary to Section 268 of the Criminal Code.

The accused is being held in custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on May 18.
