Calls from public alert police to Burlington driver on a crime spree

The driver eluded police and allegedly committed multiple crimes across municipalities

At 7:34 a.m. Feb. 11, 2020, a member of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) while patrolling on Yonge Street in the Town of Midland attempted to stop a vehicle that failed to stop and fled the scene southbound on Simcoe County Road 93.

The officer strategically followed the vehicle observing the driver's behaviour into the Village of Wyebridge when the officer stopped following the vehicle in the interest of public safety.

At 8:04 a.m. Feb. 11, 2020, a member of the public reported a suspicious person on French Road in Springwater Township who fled the area as police officers neared. The female was located at a nearby residence and arrested on outstanding arrest warrants for other police services and transported back to Southern Georgian Bay Detachment for further investigation.

OPP officers were later dispatched at 12:23 p.m. Feb. 11, 2020, to a report of a break and enter to a building on Quarry Road in Tay Township.

Officers attended the scene and arrested Michael Bretton 35 years of Burlington who was in possession of a stolen vehicle at the time of the arrest. Through investigation, it was learned that the vehicle had been taken during the previous incidents of the day and that the accused was the driver of the vehicle from the earlier occurrence in the day on Yonge Street, Midland.

The accused has been charged with the following offences contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada in relation to these incidents

  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order (3 counts)
  • Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code (2 counts)
  • Dangerous operation
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Theft of Motor Vehicle(2 counts)
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 - in Canada (2 counts)

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland at a future date.

OPP officers always appreciate calls from the public to alert them of a possible impaired driver on the roadway as an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways by working with our community members.
