Break-in leads to charges against Penetanguishene man

An area resident has been arrested by members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP detachment in connection to a series of criminal incidents within the Town of Penetanguishene during the weekend of Feb. 11 to 14, 2023.

On Feb. 11, 2023 at 11:25 p.m. a Hewson Street resident contacted the OPP Communication Centre after an individual was attempting to unlawfully enter a vehicle on the property.

On Feb. 13, 2023 the owner of a Main Street restaurant reported that the business was the victim of an overnight break-and-enter occurrence resulting in the loss of a cash box and a quantity of cash.

Through investigation of these incidents a suspect was identified and later located and arrested at 3:35 a.m. Feb. 14, 2023 on Church Street allegedly in possession of a quantity of crack cocaine and also for outstanding judicial processes.

Charged is Matthew Cascanette, 23, of Penetanguishene with the following criminal offences:

  • Fail to comply with probation order (five counts)
  • Break, enter a place with intent to commit indictable offence
  • Possession break-in instruments
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5,000 in Canada
  • Resist peace officer
  • Mischief — destroys or damages property
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance (cocaine) contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act

The accused was held for a bail hearing and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a future date on these charges.
