Armed kidnapping sparks heavy police presence in Barrie

Incident began in Vaughan when suspects kidnapped a woman and then later held her at a residence in Barrie; Pair of suspects face multiple charges

The heavy police presence in Barrie's north end Wednesday resulted from a kidnapping incident that began the previous night in Vaughan.

Investigators with the York Regional Police homicide unit have charged two people as a result of the bizarre incident.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1 at approximately 11:10 p.m., York Region police officers were summoned to a weapons call in which a suspect with a gun was allegedly forcing a woman into a grey SUV in the area of Steeles Avenue and Yonge Street.

Officers learned that the female victim had been standing outside a restaurant when she was grabbed by a suspect who was armed.

When a passerby attempted to intervene, the suspect fired a shot towards the person and fled the scene in an SUV driven by another suspect.

The investigation led officers to an address on Daphne Crescent in Barrie’s north end, where the victim was being held by the suspects, police say.

Police in tactical gear had a near seven-and-a-half hour standoff with those inside the house and entry onto the street was blocked at key points by Barrie police cruisers.

At around 4:40 p.m. the suspects were taken into custody and the victim was transported to local hospital with injuries and later released.

Keyron Mark Moore, 36, of Toronto is facing multiple charges including attempted murder, sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, discharge of a restricted firearm or a prohibited firearm with intent and use of a firearm during commission of an indictable offence.

A 17-year-old from Brampton has also been charged with:

  • Party to sexual assault
  • kidnapping
  • forcible confinement
  • fail to comply with a judicial release order

The investigation is ongoing.
