Powell River man sentenced for assaulting police, stealing credit card

Kane Anthony Crosfield, 29, pleaded guilty March 10 to charges of assaulting a peace office with a weapon, possessing and using a stolen credit card, possession of stolen property over $5,000, escaping from lawful custody, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

Crosfield has a prior record having been convicted of possessing weapon for dangerous purpose in July 2019 in Prince George.

His latest charges come after he was detained by RCMP at a local gas station. An officer asked Crosfield to produce his licence, and noticed marks on his arms indicating intravenous drug use, court heard.

The officer then asked Crosfield to step out of the vehicle and noticed a credit card, and asked to see it to cross=reference with the licence. The licence and card did not match, and was determined to be stolen.

A struggle ensued, and Crosfield was able to get back in his car and drive away. The officer had to let go of Crosfield to avoid serious injury. Crosfield was later found and arrested.

Defence lawyer Stefan Catona said Crosfield has a history of drug addiction, noting the charges were the result of lapse in sobriety after his brother's death in June 2017 from a homicide.

Judge Brian Daley sentenced Crosfield to a one-year criminal driving ban, a mandatory 10-year firearms ban, DNA sampling, and a year of probation, noting Crosfield has a 255-day credit for time served in custody.

No additional jail time was sought, and Crosfield will return to Powell River for the duration of his probation.
