Young Penetanguishene golfer tees off stateside

'Playing a round with him isn’t fun, when he’s hitting it 60 yards past you!' Mike Ross joked about playing golf with his nephew who received a scholarship to an American university and recently finished second in a major tournament

While golf courses are now temporarily closed here, a Penetanguishene teen is making the rounds stateside.

Lucas Ross, who’s in his first year at the University of Charleston in West Virginia, recently earned Mountain East Conference golfer of the week honours thanks to his recent performance at a championship golf tournament in Ravenswood, WV.

Ross, 18, finished the Mister Bee Intercollegiate Tournament in a tie for second. He posted rounds of 71 and 74 for a two-day total of 145 -- just one over par for the two days. His prowess on the course also helped lead Charleston to the team title.

His proud uncle Mike Ross, who also serves as Midland’s deputy mayor, said his nephew was born and raised in Penetang and played all his golf at the Midland Golf & Country Club

“He decided to go to the States where he was offered a scholarship,” Ross said. “There are more opportunities to play all year long.”

Ross said playing a round of golf with his nephew is always a learning experience.

“Playing a round with him isn’t fun, when he’s hitting it 60 yards past you!” Ross joked.

“Luc really is a pleasure to play with and respects the history and honour of the game.”
