Grey Jays notch first win in Bracebridge

Grey Jays split doubleheader with combined Bracebridge/Huntsville squad

Huronia Grey Jays' season now underway.

The Huronia Grey Jays travelled to Bracebridge last week to take on the combined Bracebridge/Huntsville team.

The first game of the doubleheader was a tense back and forth contest with both teams batting well and forcing the opposition to make good defensive plays.

Playing at the hot corner, third baseman Dave Pettibone made a great diving catch on a line drive to help shut down the Bracebridge attack.

Due to the hot, humid weather the game was shortened to five innings and wasn’t decided until the last out of the last inning. The Jays had scored six runs in the top of the inning and thanks to Tom Robitaille’s catch of a long fly ball to left field in the bottom of the fifth, the Grey Jays held off Bracebridge 20-19.

The punishing weather and a very rough outfield, peppered with holes and ridges, meant the Grey Jays suffered significant injuries in the first, including the loss of three outfielders.

The still undermanned Grey Jays had no substitutes and had to compete with the hampered crew in the second game. Despite the players giving their absolute best, the injured crew just couldn’t put up much of a fight and lost 18-3 in the second game.
