Midland pickleball players shine at Ontario 55+ Summer Games

'The competition was stiff,' says local cyclist who won time trial competition at event that featured almost 1,000 athletes going for gold in various sports

Simcoe County athletes returned home with gold medals this week after a successful weekend at the Ontario 55+ Summer Games in Peterborough.

Athletes from the area competed in golf, pickleball, tennis, cycling and bowling during the competition.

“We had 24 local athletes at the games from Simcoe County,” says Simcoe County Senior Games co-ordinator Larry Carter. “While winning is always in the back of your mind, our expectation was just to have fun.”

Terry Trueman and Richard Waite, from the Midland area, topped the competition in pickleball.

“The competition was stiff,” Carter says. “There were a lot of good teams, so they did very well.”

Marilyn Schriner and Carter, of Orillia, were crowned champions in the women’s and men’s 65-plus 10-km bicycle time trial competition, respectively.

“It was a challenging course,” Carter said. “There wasn’t a lot of competitors, but it’s a time trial, so it was all-out cycling.”

Winning the gold medal was a big achievement for Schriner, who has been cycling for most of her life.

“You never know what the competition is going to be like, so you always have to do your best,” Carter said. “When that results in a podium finish, it’s really great.”

Carter says he and Schriner trained for the event regularly and they felt confident in their abilities on race day.

“We did some time trials leading up to the event,” he said. “We were certainly prepared.”

The experience of competing at the Ontario 55+ Summer Games will be cherished for years, Carter says.

“There were almost 1,000 participants,” he said. “From talking to people, I gather that everyone had a good experience.”

Carter says he will be competing at the games again next year. Local athletes who are interested in becoming involved with Simcoe County Senior Games can email Carter at [email protected].

“Hopefully, we will have a larger team and a larger number of participants from Simcoe County at the next games,” he said. “That is my goal.”
