'Recovery Kits' available for businesses set to reopen

Items in the kit have been purchased from local businesses

The Economic Development Corporation of North Simcoe (EDCNS) is hoping to provide businesses some comfort wrapped in a kit.

The recovery kits now available through the non-profit contain a number of essential items prepared by local businesses that pivoted during the pandemic to start manufacturing products related to safety measures for COVID-19, said Sharon Vegh, EDCNS executive director.

"This is such a challenging time and the businesses are nervous about reopening," she said. "To us, the most important thing is supporting our businesses."

The kit includes printed signs indicating safe distancing and the direction to take when entering a store, face masks, hand sanitizer, face shields, and a $200 certificate for the installation of the tempered-glass barriers made by a local manufacturer.

The kits have been put together with the help of the Municipal Task Force.

"Our organization wasn't in a position to dole out grants or money," said Coun. Debbie Levy of Penetang, who is a member of the task force. "So it's gratifying to have come up with something concrete to support businesses at this time when they're reopening after a very tough time."

The owner of a book store on Main Street, Levy said it's a tangible way of helping local businesses.

"I'm much more comfortable when I (will) have this kit," said Levy. "I was able to puchase a certain number of masks, and I do have a sanitizing station at the door. I'm currently limiting to two people.

"But as the recovery progresses, I think we're all better off with proper signage and a uniform message displayed in the community. I would feel much better about looking after my customers when things are a bit more official looking."

Vegh said currently there are 70 kits available, and 20 people have already signed up since the program became available Wednesday morning.

"We will expect to go on until June 15, or we will see after this week if we have any more left," she said. "We've provided (businesses) with the supplier list so they can contact them for replenishing items."
