Ontario reports 4,250 new COVID cases Sunday

The province reported 3,338 recoveries and 18 deaths in today's update

Public Health Ontario has reported 4,250 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 18).

Today's report includes 3,338 recoveries and 18 new deaths.  

The April 18 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 41,588 active cases, which is up from 40,694 yesterday. 
  • 2,107 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 2,065 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 741 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (up from 726 yesterday) and 506 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 501 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 53,776 tests were processed yesterday. 
  • Another 28,651 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 13.5 million tests have been completed.

Variants of concern (Ontario-wide)

  • 34,112 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • 104 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • 207 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 
  • Another 27,373 cases have screened positive with a mutation detected, but the lineage for the variant strain not yet detected.
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccines

  • There were 86,565 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 17, which is down from 107,278 doses on April 16.
  • As of 8 p.m. on April 17, the province reported 3,837,881 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 345,310 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 416,995 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 367,691 recoveries and 7,716 deaths, of which 3,912 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.
