Inquest into death of Central North inmate set for October

Dr. Kenneth Peckham, regional supervising coroner for central region, central west office, has announced the date for the inquest into the death of Vikram Singh Dhindsa.

Mr. Dhindsa, 34, died on Jan. 18, 2017, while in custody at the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene. An inquest into Mr. Dhindsa’s death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Dhindsa’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths from occurring in similar circumstances.

The inquest is expected to last five days and hear from eight witnesses.

The inquest will start at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, at the Midland Cultural Centre, 333 King St. Dr. Mary Beth Bourne will be the presiding officer and Cameron Peters will be inquest counsel.
