Please check with area residents, anglers, fish hut operators and area marinas, urge police, stressing 'no ice is safe ice'

The members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have worked together for many years in a unique partnership to keep the community aware of ice breaking activity in the waters of Georgian Bay near Midland.

As of Jan. 16, 2022 it has been learned that recent ice breaking operations have been completed and will restart in the latter part of March 2022 when the spring shipping season opens.

Please remember that ice surfaces can only be summed up with the phrase "No ice is safe ice" and it is so very important to "Know before you go" before venturing onto frozen ice surfaces that there is sufficient ice for you and your equipment.

Please check with area residents, anglers, fish hut operators and area marinas as "we are all in this together" if you go through the ice. Emergency services will respond once they are advised, but the effects of ice cold water on your body mean that "self rescue" is likely your best and possibly your only chance to get out of the water.
