A locally inspired charitable campaign wrapped up recently to great success.

The Huronia Community Foundation (HCF) launched the GIVING LOCALLY campaign last June after receiving a community grant from the Town of Midland. The campaign served to highlight the importance of supporting local charities by ensuring donation dollars stayed in the region.

And as the year came to a close, indications were that North Simcoe residents did exactly that. Online donations to Huronia Community Foundation alone totalled almost $500,000 in 2021.

According to the local foundation, this show of generosity enables HCF to continue to provide financial support to the local charities and organizations that provide services benefiting local residents.

“We would like to thank everyone who made a donation to a local North Simcoe charity last year,” HCF executive director Scott Warnock said.

“Every dollar goes a long way in helping them continue to do the great work that they do, even under less than ideal circumstances.”

The pandemic has forced many local charities to do more with less, according to the foundation. That means their ability to raise funds to support the work they do has been dramatically curtailed by COVID-19.

“The charity sector has had a very difficult time with limited opportunities to raise the funds they need to provide essential and desired services," Warnock said when launching the campaign, pointing out a thriving charity sector means a thriving community for all.

Everyone uses a charity at some point, whether it is the hospital, a counselling service, museums, public libraries, community health or mental health services, a local church or school. Warnock said HCF doesn’t want to see any of the local charities close or severely reduce services to this community.
