Cycle Camelot takes places this month.

Getting out for a great ride and helping the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre are on tap for many area residents this month.

Cycle Camelot gives cyclists the chance to raise funds for the centre at their own pace this time around since unlike previous years, the fundraiser is taking place daily until August 22 rather than on one specific day.

"We had originally planned to be together on August 22,” centre executive director Suzanne Marchand said, noting the annual fundraiser is their largest and they’re hoping to collect $80,000 this time around.

“But with COVID and appreciating social distancing and all of the requirements, we launched 22 days of Cycle Camelot.”

Participants are invited to enjoy leisurely bike rides in their neighbourhoods or challenge themselves by riding further than they ever imagined. So far, they’re well past the halfway mark of their goal and have raised more than $44,000.

“We've been encouraging individuals to participate and select a road or a distance of their choice,” Marchand said, noting all ages and fitness levels are welcome and for $50 participants receive a charitable tax receipt.

For the past eight years, Cycle Camelot has united cycling enthusiasts and centre supporters while raising more than $300,000 to help support local people living with cancer, their families and caregivers.

“The cancer support center provides psychosocial support for those going through the cancer journey, their family members and caregivers,” Marchand said, noting the centre doesn’t receive any ongoing or sustained government funding.

““There's no cost for any of the services that we provide. So a member utilizes our modified yoga programs or social support  groups or our other programs at no cost to them. We rely on the generosity of the community as a registered charity to be able to provide those services to our members.”
