Area artists bring their work to the virtual world

“It’s also a great way for people to get to know the artists in the area," Quest curator says.

Quest Art School & Gallery has adapted to the times with something as unique as the many area artists it features.

The Midland entity has created a virtual gallery with plans in the works for an online fundraiser to take the place of its main annual fundraiser that has had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re hoping it will make people feel less isolated and feel connected with each other,” Quest executive director/curator Virginia Eichhorn said of the online gallery offering that allows area residents to see what artists are doing in their studios these days.

Following an initial request, several artists responded and shared what they’re up to nowadays.

“It’s also a great way for people to get to know the artists in the area,” Eichhorn said.

One such artist is Charlotte Sprague, who included a painting.

“This is a work in progress, which I started on day 1 of self isolation,” she said. “All of my art is personal, often reflecting a memory or outlook. This piece is particularly so, as it has evolved as anxiety and optimism battle it out for dominance.”

Eichhorn said many artists are also incorporating the colour yellow into their works since it can create a sense of optimism, which can help those studying a work of art gain a feeling of happiness during what can be a time of anxiety for some.

Sprague also employed the colour in her work.

“Yesterday netted an injection of yellow, reflecting sunny days of spring, and looking forward to being able to share the company and closeness of family and friends in the future,” Sprague said. “I will continue to work on this piece until we can all be socially less distant.”

Quest is also planning to have a virtual gala later this month to temporarily replace its Kaleidoscope Gala that had been planned for April 25.

“Obviously, that’s not happening,” Eichhorn said. “It’s always a great, fun event. We’re looking at something in November to replace it.”

In the interim, however, the plans are to hold something on the same day later this month via social media.

Eichhorn added: “Maybe some people will want to dress up and have a glass of wine at home and toast Quest.”
