The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 34 new COVID-19 cases and one death in its update today.
The death reported today was a man from Bradford who was over 80 years old. He died on Feb. 21 and his case is not linked to any outbreaks.
There are currently 513 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
According to the health unit, 184 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK, which is up by two cases since last report.
The two confirmed variant cases were previously reported as regular COVID-19 cases and have now been confirmed B.1.1.7 variant cases. Both are cases from the apartment outbreak in Collingwood. The outbreak remains "active" with 25 cases linked since Feb. 5.
There are also 290 cases that have screened positive as variants (awaiting confirmatory testing to determine which variant), which is up by 16 cases since yesterday.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,394 cases of COVID-19 with 5,646 of those cases recovered and 189 cases ending in death.
There are 19 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. There has been one additional hospitalization reported since yesterday's update.
The health unit has administered 38,231 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka to health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as to all eligible long-term care home residents. The health unit reports more than 15,000 people in the region have received both required doses of the vaccine, including more than 90 per cent of the region's long-term care residents.
There are seven ongoing outbreaks at health care facilities in Simcoe County including Grove Park long-term care home in Barrie, Bradford Valley care Community, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care (Penetanguishene), Bayshore Transitional Care Unit (Barrie), Sara Vista long-term care home in Springwater, Leacock Care Centre in Orillia, and the Barrieview Retirement Community.
Tudhope Manor Retirement Residence in Orillia is under observation for a "suspected outbreak" because an external service provider tested positive for COVID-19.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Tiny (1): A woman between 65 and 79 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
- Collingwood (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case is attributed to community transmission.
- Wasaga Beach (1): A man between 45 and 64 years old.
- Barrie (17): Two youth under 18, two women and nine men between 18 and 34 years old, two men between 35 and 44 years old, a man and a woman between 45 and 64 years old. Nine cases are linked to close contact, and three are outbreak-related.
- Springwater (2): A man between 18 and 34 years old and a man between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are linked to close contact.
- Innisfil (3): A youth under 18, a man between 35 and 44 years old and a woman between 45 and 64 tears old. Two cases are linked to close contact.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (1): A man between 35 and 44 years old.
- Orillia (2): A youth under 18 and a woman between 35 and 44 years old.
- Essa (2): A man between 35 and 44 years old and a man between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- Adjala-Tosorontio (1): A woman between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
- New Tecumseth (3): A youth under 18, a woman between 18 and 34 years old, and a man between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- There are four new cases in Muskoka including two in Muskoka Lakes, one in Bracebridge, and one in Huntsville.
