Hawkestone man carves out uplifting message (8 photos)

Larry Whitehead has been creating large, wooden signs to encourage people; 'We’re all going through it and we’re all going to get through it'

Everyone’s looking for a positive sign during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Larry Whitehead has a bunch of them.

The Hawkestone carver decided to put his woodworking skills to good use in an effort to brighten the mood as many struggle through the pandemic.

“I thought, ‘You can either be part of the problem or part of the solution,’” Whitehead said.

After hearing the term “stronger together” used often, he decided to use it on his signs, which he has created out of various types of wood and placed around Hawkestone, Orillia and Barrie.

“I don’t want any money. It’s just my way of making people feel a little better,” he said.

The signs range from about two to five feet in length and it takes Whitehead five to six hours to create each one, and he said it’s been worth every minute.

When asked what he hopes people get from seeing the signs, he choked up.

“I hope they get some encouragement,” he said. “You’re going through all of this, but you’re not the only one. We’re all going through it and we’re all going to get through it.”

Whitehead has created a couple of dozen signs so far. The next one, bearing the message, “We’re all in this together,” will be placed near the fire hall in Hawkestone.
