ONTARIO: OPP release photo of suspect after police monument vandalized in June

Police are seeking information on a person of interest with a zebra-striped purse

Someone has vandalized the Ontario Provincial Police Memorial near Queen's Park, OPP say.

Police say the memorial, which was created to honour Ontario police officers who have died in the line of duty, was vandalized on Saturday, June 20.

Photos sent to media by the OPP show that someone has written 'BLM' on the monument with red spray paint.

BLM is a common acronym for Black Lives Matter, a movement to end anti-Black racism and the systematic oppression of Black and Indigenous People of Colour.

The monument's defacing comes amid increasing calls by activists to defund the police, in hopes of significant social reforms amid racial tensions in the U.S. and Canada.

OPP have since released an image of a person of interest and encourage anyone with information to come forward.
